The President of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar, Fridolin Cardinal Ambongo Besungu, has warmly welcomed Pope Leo XIV on the occasion of his first pastoral visit to Africa, describing it as a historic and deeply symbolic moment for the continent.

In a message addressed to the Holy Father, Cardinal Ambongo expressed “profound honor and immense joy” on behalf of the Church-Family of God in Africa and its islands. He portrayed Africa as a “land of resilience, vibrant spirituality and hope,” noting that the Pope’s presence highlights the continent’s growing importance in the universal mission of the Church.

According to the message, the visit demonstrates the Pope’s deep love and concern for Africa and its peoples. It also affirms the critical role the Church plays in promoting not only spiritual growth but also peace, justice and sustainable development across the continent.

The vibrant faith of African communities

While acknowledging the challenges facing Africa, including poor governance, poverty, inequality, conflicts, corruption, and climate change, the President of SECAM emphasized that these difficulties present opportunities for renewal. He pointed to the strong faith of African communities, the dedication of clergy and laity, and the resilience of the people as signs of hope and transformation.

The Pope’s visit, coming at the beginning of his pontificate, is considered as “a sign of encouragement to all our faithful who labor tirelessly for evangelization, social justice, peace, and the development of our nations”, said Cardinal Ambongo. This papal pilgrimage is also a call to deepen commitment and renew missionary efforts in a rapidly changing world.

SECAM expressed hope that the Pope’s messages will inspire unity, strengthen interreligious dialogue, and promote initiatives that uplift the poor and marginalized.

The message concluded with prayers for the success of the visit and a renewed commitment to building a continent rooted in justice, dignity, and peace.

This Apostolic Journey of Pope Leo XIV to Africa is scheduled for April 13-23, 2026 and will take him to four countries: Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea.
