SECAM Organises workshop for National and Regional Secretaries General in Africa.

A workshop organised by the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) is taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa from  March 10-14, 2014 for Secretaries General of National and Regional Episcopal Conferences in Africa. The Workshop has as its theme: “The role of Secretaries General of National and Regional Episcopal Conferences in the  reconciliation processes, Good Governance, Common Good and Democratic Transitions in Africa, in the  light of the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortations: Ecclesia in Africa and Africae Munus.”

The Workshop which is taking place during a meeting of the Secretaries General aims, among others, to:

  • Prepare a road map towards the celebration of a Year of Reconciliation in Africa; in 2015
  • Share experiences on the role of National and Regional Secretaries Generals on issues of reconciliation, good governance, common good and democratic transitions in Africa in the light of the Post- Synodal Apostolic Exhortations: Ecclesia in Africa and Africae Munus  and a recent  SECAM’s  Pastoral Letter on Governance  Common Good and Democratic Transitions in Africa.
  • Develop priority actions for the Church in Africa in the context of SECAM Secretariat Strategic Plans for 2013-2016 in order to  strengthen the profile of SECAM and to make it more efficient and proactive;
  • Understand the role of modern social communications, particularly social media, in enhancing the evangelisation activities of SECAM.

The Workshop will include panel discussions; Regional reports; Spiritual and theological reflections. The participants of the Workshop will include officials of SECAM Secretariat; National and Regional Secretaries General of Episcopal Conferences; Partner Agencies and representatives of Sister Continental Episcopal Conferences.

During the opening ceremony the following will address the participants:

Most Rev. Stephen BRISLIN, Archbishop of Cape Town, SOUTH AFRICA and President of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC); Most Rev, Mario Roberto CASSARI, Apostolic Nuncio to SOUTH AFRICA.

The opening message from SECAM will be delivered by Rt. Rev. Sithembele SIPUKA, Bishop of Mthatha, SOUTH AFRICA and  member of the Standing Committee of SECAM.

Mr. Hippolyt PUL, Regional Coordinator of the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Africa Justice and Peace-building Working Group will give the key note address on: Situational analysis of key conflicts in Africa and the role of regional and continental bodies in reconciliation processes.

Rev.Fr. Joseph KOMAKOMA, Secretary General of SECAM and Rev. Sr. Hermenegild MAKORO CPS, Secretary General of Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) are coordinating the Workshop.
