The Evangelization Commission of SECAM has held a workshop on the relevance of teaching the social teachings of the Church in African institutions of learning through the establishment of a continental platform for pastoral ministry in those institutions.
The meeting took place from 19 to 22 February 2019, in Abidjan and was attended by representatives from the Regional Episcopal Conferences of Africa.
The workshop was a response to pastoral concerns strongly expressed by the Bishops of Africa and the Holy See on the need for appropriate programmes on the Catholic Social Teachings for all schools, from primary to university levels.
The workshop also reflected on SECAM’s Golden Jubilee from (1969-2019)
At the 3rd Plenary Assembly meeting in Kampala in 1972, the Bishops of Africa expressed the wish to set up several continental pastoral platforms including student platforms under the coordination of SECAM. Also, at the Second Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Africa in 2009, Pope Benedict XVI strongly recommended that it was essential to train students in the Social Doctrine of the Church.
