In August 2015, the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the African Union (AU) Political Affairs Commission. The MoU has opened a door for the Church in Africa to engage the AU on policies that affect citizens of the continent at all levels.
To enhance SECAM’s objectives of working with the AU and contributing towards the fulfilment of the continental vision, the SECAM AU Liaison Office in collaboration with Regional Justice and Peace Commissions, and Regional and National Catholic Parliamentary Liaison Offices (CPLOs) gathered in Johannesburg, South Africa from 11th – 14th October,2019 for a consultation workshop on the theme: “The contribution of the Catholic Parliamentary Liaison Offices to the Wellbeing of Citizens on the Continent”.
The main objective of this Consultation Workshop was “to contribute to the enhancement of the Church’s influence at all levels through credible information sharing”.
The workshop also sought to achieve the following among other things:
i. To create strong links with Regional and National CPLOs
ii. To improve mutual information sharing mechanisms between SECAM and Regional and National Justice and Peace Commissions, and CPLOs in order to engage with decision making bodies with credible information
iii. To enhance the Church’s role in the promotion of peace and security for the integral development of the continent
