Pope Thanks WYD Volunteers as Event Ends in Panama
At the end of the 34th World Youth Day (WYD) held in Panama from the 22 -27 January 2019, Pope Francis expressed his gratitude as he met with thousands of WYD volunteers who had worked diligently to make the event a success.
The Pope was impressed with how much the young people had given of themselves. In encouraging them, he said, “Commitment makes us grow. This is what makes us big. You all gave the best of yourselves to make possible the miracle of multiplication, not only of loaves but of hope. In giving the best of yourselves, by committing yourselves, you performed the miracle of multiplying hope. Thank you all for this.”
The pope also added that through their work all of them have shown it is possible to renounce one’s own interests in favour of others.
The Holy Father’s Message to young people in preparation for the XXXIV World Youth Day 2019, was on the theme: “I am the servant of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38). The Message, published on the day of the celebration of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, concluded a cycle of three Marian messages dedicated to young people along their journey WYD 2016 to WYD 2019.
The Holy Father addressed all young people of the world, believers and non-believers, encouraging them to discover the characteristic values of being young; to be at the service of others and to be in conversation with God with an attitude of listening, just like Mary – She listened to what the angel said to her and then she responded.
