End of Year Message from the President of SECAM, Most Rev. Gabriel Mbilingi, Archbishop of Lubango (Angola)
Greetings from SECAM!
As we come to the end of another year, we humbly and thankfully recognize the many events through which we saw the hand of God as a Church at the continental.
Among the many blessings, we thank God for having walked with us in successfully holding key historic events.
We thank God that our Secretaries General, at all levels, were able to meet in Zambia last April. As our closest collaborators, the Secretaries General assist the Bishops of Africa in the implementation of pastoral priorities across the continent. In the same year, we were able to have two fruitful Seminars on mutual pastoral concerns with the Council of European Episcopal Conferences (CCEE) and also the German Bishops Conference, in March and May, respectively. This demonstrates the oneness of the universal Church according to the prayer of our Lord Jesus Christ (John 17:11b)
It was also a big blessing for us to formally launch the Year of Golden Jubilee of SECAM on 29th July 2018. This is a year of preparation, both spiritual and material, to celebrate the SECAM Golden Jubilee on 28th July 2019 in Kampala (Uganda). This is a blessed year when we are all invited to a new conversion so that we can deeply live out our Christian calling in our day to day life.
We are being called to celebrate the Lord’s goodness and to proclaim Jesus Christ our savior. We are also being called upon to be thankful for the gift of the continent of Africa with all its material and human riches. We join the Holy Father to be conscientious promoters and defenders of all of God’s creation, on this earth, our “common home”.
We are being called upon to be conscious of our own contribution to the problems that we face and seek God’s mercy and extend the same mercy to other human beings.
It is in the spirit of all this that I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, 2019.
